Rhizome - Speculative habitat design
Design Armageddon was an interdisciplinary workshop exploring human survival in a near-future apocalypse, focusing on four areas of refuge: Airborne, Subterranean, Oceanic, and Montane. Working on the Subterranean refuge with a focus on water as the area of impact, the final proposal, "Rhizome," envisions a self-sufficient underground settlement. The settlement is based on the premise of extreme global temperatures and ozone layer depletion. Key features of the design include an automated system called "The Sunflower" to direct light into a central Atrium using mirrors, and
a closed-loop water system that uses condensation and a selectively permeable membrane for purification, generating more water than consumed to give back to the water table. The civilization is heavily dependent on fungi for food, light, clothing, and comfort, and is structured based on principles of bio-mimicry and bio-engineering. The name Rhizome was chosen because it invokes the feeling of a safe, futuristic home and reflects the settlement's adaptive, root-like structure that changes with the geography.
